Download/ Streaming Questions

8/05/2008 05:04:00 AM by DTLCT
Q: Are you going to put the videos on streaming sites?
A: Right now, we have a Veoh account, but AkumaX's in charge of it and he's a busy person so we don't pressure him about it. There's also a reason why we let other downloaders stream our videos. We did all the work of subbing already. All we ask is some contribution from viewers in this area in either downloading it and/or streaming it for us.

Q: Can you provide DDL (Direct Download Links) for the dramas?
A: Right now, AkumaX and DTLCT are the only ones with a decent enough Internet speed to upload the videos onto some direct download site, but AkumaX's always busy (as stated many times already) and could only do it once in awhile. He's already seeding for MF and KT fulltime if that counts for anything. (That counts for A LOT already! - if you ask me) DTLCT is currently uploading the ones for KT when she has time or isn't doing other subbing tasks or sedding for KT. It's a slow process, but we're getting there. Once again, we're already seeding if it counts for anything after all the subbing we've done.

Q: Can you provide RAWs for (blank) drama?
A: You can find them on various sites that have raws - like YDY, icefish, 6th Sense.

Q: How do I download torrents?
A: I will post up a tutorial later to guide you through the steps. (Or if you can't wait, go ahead and search around Online for tutorials and/or directions. I'm sure there are lots around.)

General Questions

8/03/2008 05:21:00 AM by DTLCT
Q: Can I join the team?/ Can I help you guys with subbing?
A: Sure, just send us an e-mail at shinzukisubs@gmail.com with a message explaining which dramas you're interested in helping with and what do you want to help in (i.e. translating or timing).

Q: Can you please sub (blank) drama(s)?
A: We will take your suggestions into consideration and present it to the rest of the team. However, we will respect our team's decision whether to sub the suggested drama(s) or not. (This goes back to the motto 'We sub for fun'.) With that said, suggestions are welcomed, but there is no guarantee that the drama(s) will pass through with the team's voting.

Q: How come there are no news whatsoever from the staff and it's been a long time since last release?
A: My question to you: Do you want us to take the only free time we have during the day to sub the dramas and get it going or spend time monitoring the blog 24/7 and answer/update on every single detail?

We already have the Progress page and update it as much as we can at each step. So, that goes for that one. And IF any major problem comes up, like the problem with MF's progress several months back, we will inform you. TRUST ME, we will.

Q: How long until the next episode is out?/ When is the next episode out?
A: As long as it takes. It's out when all work is done with it (i.e. translating, timing, QC-ing, encoding).

Q: Why don't you recruit additional QC-ing staff to help if the current staff is busy?
A: We DO NOT recruit QC-ers because we like to observe how they translate, time, etc before promoting them. It is a drawback but it will help us see where they are before letting them QC. If you refer to Our Subbing Way guides, you will know why we're that strict with QC-ers.

Our Subbing Way: Steps & Procedures

4/11/2008 01:06:00 PM by DTLCT
Most sub groups follow a 5-step process, which includes Translating, Timing, Editing, Quality Checking, and then Encoding. Our group follows a 3-step process, plus type-setting and encoding. (It's somewhat like how SUBlimes does it!)

Steps:
1. Translating
2. Timing
3. Quality Checking
4. Type-setting (essential and/or necessary)
5. Encoding (necessary)

Tasks Descriptions:
This section explains what specific things are being done at each step whether it is obvious - or less obvious - and to clear up confusions.

Translating:
The translator will translate from the Chinese audio and/or subtitles from the videos itself.

Timing:
The timer's job is to time the English translations according to the videos. It depends on how much talking was going on for each episode, the time it takes to time the subs will vary. But the time it takes to time accurately takes more effort.

Quality Checking:
The QC-er's job is to check both the translations and timing, plus grammar and whatnot. He or she makes sure that the language and terms used are accurate, appropriate, and understandable to the general audience. When the QC-er checks for timing, he or she will make sure that each line of Chinese sub is timed to a line of English sub. It also depends how fast the actors and/or actresses are speaking. In short, the QC-er have to ensure that there's enough time to read the subs as well as understanding it.

* Sometimes the QC-er will have to fill in spaces that the translators and/or timers left empty.
* Spot-translating only occurs when the translator is using a different version of the video to translate from and the timer doesn't understand Chinese to time it accurately line-per-line. This - of course - occurs before timing.

The QC-ers:
acemaverick
momo - Occassionally (when she's free or could spare time away from her projects for SUBlimes)
vernzz  - MIA

DTLCT - Has become a permanent QC-er due to vernzz's MIA.

Type-setting:
Type-setters are responsible for coming up with an appropriate style for both the text and color used in the dramas. They make sure it's easy to read when it goes on screen. The first episode of the dramas are usually harder since the type-setter has to start from the scratch.

*So far, thanks to the awesome momo for offering to help us with type-setting the first episodes of the dramas and get everything rolling for us. (She has mad skill, I'm telling you!)

Encoding:
Once everything's done, all the encoder needs to do is pop the video into Virtualdub/Virtualdubmod, attach the subs, and then encode. Sounds easy? NOT! This gets tricky sometimes if it isn't done properly. There could be audio problems like out-of-sync or image problems that needs de-interlacing, etc. Luckily, we have our wonderful AkumaX (whom fufu is kind enough to lend him to us! And he's the greatest with helping us out far!), so the process is less nerve-wrecking on our part.

Releasing:
This is the necessary part and usually done by the encoder (aka AkumaX and DTLCT for now). The encoder will release whenever he is done with encoding or whenever he has time. (And we honestly don't want to rush AkumaX because he also has other jobs from SUBlimes and whatnot.)

Note that the time limit for each step is unlimited because:
  • Everyone has their own schedule and/or is in a different time-zone
  • School and/or work comes FIRST no matter what
  • AND last, but never least - we sub because we want to (aka for fun) - since this was our main purpose in starting this fansub group in the first place
We do check up on the progress of each member once awhile, but as long as they provide their reasons and/or status of delay, we won't rush them for it!
